Why custom trays beat anything in a box
Dr. Basil fits your trays to your teeth and sets the gel strength to your enamel and sensitivity — even results, on your own schedule.
The drugstore strip’s problem isn’t only weak gel — it’s fit. A one-size strip hugs the easy front surfaces and misses the curves, edges and overlaps, which is how patchy whitening happens. Your take-home kit starts with trays molded precisely to your teeth, so professional-strength gel sits evenly against every surface — and stays off your gums.
You whiten at home, typically a short wear each day or overnight depending on the gel we choose together, and watch the shade change across one to two weeks. Because we’ve checked your teeth first and the trays are yours forever, it’s also the perfect maintenance tool after any whitening — a top-up before an event costs you a syringe of gel, not a new kit.
Take-home or in-office?
In-office wins on speed — an hour versus weeks. Take-home wins on control, gradual change and easy maintenance, and it’s gentler for sensitivity-prone patients. Plenty of patients do both: an in-office jump start, then trays to hold the shade. We’ll help you pick at your visit.
The routine
Wear the trays with gel for the prescribed window — for most patients either thirty to sixty minutes a day or overnight, depending on the gel strength we choose for you — for one to two weeks. The shade change is gradual and controlled, which many people prefer: nobody at work asks what happened, your teeth just quietly brighten. Afterward, the trays become your maintenance tool: a top-up night before an event, or whenever coffee has collected its tax.
Why we still start with an exam
Same rule as our in-office whitening: health first. We confirm your gums and teeth are sound, clean away the biofilm that blocks gel, and map any crowns or fillings in your smile line — dental work doesn’t whiten, so the plan accounts for it up front. Whitening is the easiest cosmetic win in dentistry when it’s set up properly, and the most common source of regret when it isn’t.
Take-home or in-office — which fits you
In-office is speed: a dramatic change in one supervised visit. Take-home is control and value: gradual, adjustable, repeatable forever with the same trays. And the best answer is often both — a jump-start session in the chair, then trays at home to finish and maintain. Tell us your deadline and your sensitivity history and we’ll point you right.

Who take-home whitening is for
The take-home route fits when:
- You’d rather whiten gradually than all at once
- Your teeth lean sensitive and you want a gentler pace
- You want trays you can reuse for years of top-ups
- Your schedule makes an in-office appointment awkward
- You like controlling the endpoint — stop when the mirror says so
- You’ve had in-office whitening and want to maintain it

Take-home whitening questions, answered
How is this different from whitening strips?
Fit, strength and supervision. Custom trays cover every surface evenly with dental-grade gel, after a dentist has confirmed your teeth are healthy to whiten — three things no box on a shelf can offer.
How long until I see results?
Most patients notice a change within a few days, with full results over one to two weeks depending on the gel strength and wear time we set for you.
What about sensitivity?
Gradual whitening is the gentler route, and we can tune gel strength and wear time if your teeth are reactive — tell us and we’ll build the kit around it.
How long do the trays last?
Years, with basic care. When you want a touch-up, you only need gel refills from us — that’s the quiet economy of the custom kit.
How long do the trays last?
Years. The trays are precision-molded to your teeth and don’t wear out with normal use — when the gel runs out you just pick up refills, not a new kit. If your teeth shift (or you complete Invisalign), we remake them.
What if my teeth get sensitive?
Shorten the sessions, skip a day between wears, or switch to a gentler gel — all normal adjustments, and desensitizing gel can run in the same trays. Sensitivity management is built into the plan, not a surprise.
Can I just use a stronger gel to finish faster?
The strength is prescribed to your enamel and your sensitivity history, not to impatience. Stronger isn’t faster in any way that matters — it’s just more sensitive. The trays give even, complete results at the strength that suits you.
